First match of the season

Well that was bloody brilliant! I should never have doubted handing over my position as Beater to Trengrove. She and Blaire absolutely dominated the field with their bats. The match was long, and bloody, but in the end we won, 160 to Nothing. I even managed to score a goal, which quite surprised me as I've never had much confidence in myself as a Chaser. MacGlory, of course played as well as he always does. He spotted the snitch early and kept after it until it was in his hand. Scrounge was right, I will do whatever it takes to win. One down, two to go.

Summer, Finally!

Dear Mum,

The term ended well. Slytherin won the House Cup, due in no small part to the essays that Scrounge and I wrote. And, I managed to get myself elected Captain of the Quidditch team. Not a bad way to end the year at all.

I'll working for professor Carrigan again this summer, but I' going to spend some time in London first. I finally saw Georgiana. I won't write about that now, but need to talk to you about it soon, in person.

I ate a scoop of every flavor that Glacier Mountain has to offer. Having tried them all, I still like vanilla best. But I think I've had enough ice-cream to last me a while.

Hope to see you soon.

Love always,

Romuald

Centaurea cyanus

The Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is a small annual flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe. It is an annual plant growing to 40-90 cm tall, with gray-green branched stems. The leaves are lanceolate, 1-4 cm long. The flowers are most commonly an intense blue colour, produced in flower-heads (capitula) 1.5-3 cm diameter, with a ring of a few large, spreading ray florets surrounding a central cluster of disc florets.

Cornflower prefers arable fields, often on sandy, acidic soils. Flowers are self-incompatible and are borne between May and August. The seeds, which are believed to remain viable for several years, generally germinate during the following spring with a second flush in late summer. This species was often found in association with corn marigold (Chrysanthemum segetum), which also germinates in spring.

The same anthocyanin pigment makes roses red but cornflowers blue, a phenomenon that has thus far not been entirely explained. The anthocyanin in the blue cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) has been known for many years to be cyanidin 3,5-diglucoside, namely cyanin. However, during my work with cornflower in the Potions lab, it became evident that the major anthocyanin in the blue cornflower is not cyanin but cyanidin 3-succinyl glucoside 5-glucoside. This anthocyanin has not been reported in the literature and is tentatively called “centaurocyanin”. Centaurocyanin is chromatographically identical with the anthocyanin contained in crystalline protocyanin, the blue pigment from the cornflower. thus, there seems no doubt that this anthocyanin, but not cyanin, forms the blue complex pigment protocyanin. The bright blue colour comes from the arrangement of four metal ions, which bind to a complex of six different molecules, made up from two pigments. This pigment structure is completely different to the pigment found in other blue flowers. A strategically placed iron ion and magnesium ion give the blue colour, while two calcium ions give the structure stability. This tetrametal complex may represent a previously undiscovered type of supermolecular pigment.

In folklore, cornflowers were worn by young men in love; if the flower faded too quickly, it was taken as a sign that the man’s love was unrequited. This practice has earned them the colloquial name of Bachelor’s Buttons, as they are generally referred to within the floral industry.

In herbalism a decoction of cornflower is effective in treating conjunctivitis, and as a wash for tired eyes. This is no small consolation, given the brutally excessive hours that Hogwarts students are expected to spend on homework and other extracurricular studies.

In the past C. cyanus often grew as a weed in crop fields. It is now endangered in its native habitat by agricultural intensification, particularly over-use of herbicides, destroying its habitat; in the United Kingdom it has declined from 264 sites to just 4 sites in the last 20 years. Cornflower once occurred throughout the UK and was a troublesome weed of arable land. Between 1930 and 1960 it was recorded from 264 ten km squares, but by 1979 it had declined to fewer than 60 ten km squares. Today, self-sustaining populations are thought to be confined to only one site in Suffolk, one on the Isle of Wight, one in Lincolnshire and one in St. Mary Mead. Isolated plants still occur over a large area of the south and east of England and in Wales, although many are due to introductions from wildflower seed mixtures and most persist for no longer than a year. Large numbers sometimes occur when there are deep excavations for roads and pipelines. In Europe as a whole, cornflower is not threatened and is still widely distributed, although it has declined in much of north-west Europe.

In the UK the cornflower is now classified as Endangered. It receives general protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Agricultural changes have been largely responsible for the decline of cornflower, including the increased use of herbicides and fertilisers, the development of highly competitive crop varieties, the destruction of field-edge refuges, the demise of traditional crop rotations, and the conversion of marginal arable land to pasture. The same factors are now providing constraints on its recovery.

Recommendations:
A plan of action aimed at the restoration of cornflower habitat must develop and maintain viable populations at all extant native sites where the species is long-established and encourage the natural colonisation of new sites.

The development of relevant agri-environment schemes, such as the pilot Arable Stewardship Scheme in England, should be encouraged as a potential means of re-establishing cornflower in the countryside. When reviewing such schemes, consideration must be given to whether changes are needed to increase their potential benefits for this and other threatened arable species.

A network of suitable habitats within the vicinity of cornflower sites needs to be developed, thereby providing opportunities for its spread. Seed should be collected from all extant native sites and any restored sites and deposited in a seed bank established for this purpose. As far as possible, it must be ensured that any seed of cornflower included in wildflower seed mixtures is of native origin.

As far as possible, it should be ensured that all relevant agri environment project officers are advised of locations of this species, its importance, management requirements and potential threats. On sites where cornflower is a significant consideration, landowners and managers should be advised of the presence and importance of this species, specific management for its conservation, and any potentially damaging actions. Particular attention should be given to optimal cultivation and harvest times.

First Aid for Dragon Burns

The primary difficulty that sets handling dragons apart from other dangerous magical creatures is the very high potential for severe burn injuries. Dragon burns are caused by exposure to a dragon’s breath, and may be classified according to the chemical basis of the dragon’s ‘fire’. Along with the usual flames, dragon burns may also be caused by corrosive substances from the digestive tract or scale friction. Dragon scalds are caused by wet heat - hot liquids and vapours such as saliva or steam. When burns have been treated, the casualty should also be thoroughly examined for claw and bite damage as well.

Assessing a Burn
There are a number of factors to consider when assessing the severity of a burn and the method of treatment, including the species of dragon, whether the airway is involved, the depth of the burn, and its extent.

The extent of the burn will indicate whether shock is likely to develop, as tissue fluid (serum) leaks from the burned area and is replenished by fluids from the circulatory system. The greater the extent of the burn, the more severe the shock will be. The cause of the burn may also signal any other possible complications. Burns also carry a serious risk of infection, which increases according to the size and depth of the burn. The body’s natural barrier, the skin, is destroyed by burning, leaving it exposed to germs. This is particularly important as dragons’ lairs are often breeding grounds for microbiotic contagions.

Depth of Burns
Burns can be categorised as follows:

Superficial burns (Rare)
These involve only the outer layer of the skin, and are characterised by redness, swelling and tenderness. Typical examples are mild singeing, or a scald produced by nostril vapours. Superficial burns usually heal well if prompt first aid is given, and do not require medical treatment unless extensive.

Partial-thickness Burns (Medium)
These damage a ‘partial thickness’ of the skin, and require medical treatment. The skin looks raw, and blisters form. These burns usually heal well, but can be serious, if extensive. In adults, partial-thickness burns affecting more than 50% of the body’s surface can be fatal. This percentage is less in children and the elderly.

Full-thickness Burns (Well Done)
These damage all layers of the skin. Damage may extend beyond the skin to affect nerves, muscle and fat. The skin may look pale, waxy, and sometimes charred. Full-thickness burns of any size always require immediate medical attention, and usually require specialist treatment.

Extent of Burns
The area of a burn gives an approximate indication of the degree of shock that will develop and, in conjunction with depth, can be used as a guide to the required level of treatment.

The ‘rules of nine’ is a guide used to calculate the extent of a burn as a percentage of the body’s total surface area, and to assess what level of medical attention is required. Due to the relative size of dragons to their likely casualties, full thickness burns of great extent are not uncommon.

In an otherwise healthy adult:
Any partial-thickness burn of 1% or more (an area approximating to that of the casualty’s hand) must be seen by a medical practitioner.

A partial-thickness burn of 9% or more will cause shock to develop, and the casualty will require hospital treatment.

A full-thickness burn of any size requires hospital treatment.

Severe Burns and Scalds
In EVERY case, first make sure the dragon is no longer in close proximity! Its is difficult if not impossible to supply adequate first aid while a dragon is still attacking. The next priority is to cool the injury; the longer the burning goes unchecked, the more severely the casualty will be injured. Resuscitate the casualty only when cooling is underway. All severe burns carry the danger of shock.

Treatment of Severe Burns and Scalds
DO NOT overcool the casualty; this may dangerously lower the body temperature.
DO NOT remove anything sticking to the burn; this may cause further damage and cause infection.
DO NOT touch or interfere with the injured area.
DO NOT burst blisters.
DO NOT apply lotions, ointment, or potions to the injury.

Lay the casualty down, protecting the burned area from contact with the ground, if possible. When cooling spells are unavailable, douse the burn with copious amounts of cold liquid. Thorough cooling may take 10 minutes or more, but this must not delay the casualty’s transmission to hospital. While cooling the burns, check airway, breathing, and pulse, and be prepared to resuscitate.

Gently remove any rings, amulets, belts, shoes, or smouldering clothing from the injured area, before it starts to swell. Carefully remove burned robes unless they are sticking to the burn.

Cover the injury with a sterile burns sheet or other suitable non-fluffy material, to protect from infection. Sterile films are preferred but even plastic kitchen wrap will work in an emergency. Burns to the face should be cooled with water, not covered, unless other arrangements for breathing have been made.

Contact the emergency medical team from St. Mungo’s immediately. While waiting, treat the casualty for shock. Monitor and record breathing and pulse, and resuscitate, if necessary.

Burns to the Mouth and Throat
Burns to the face, and burns in the mouth or throat are very dangerous, as they cause rapid swelling and inflammation of the air passages. The swelling will rapidly block the airway, giving rise to a serious risk of suffocation. Immediate and highly specialised medical assistance is required.

Treatment of Burns to the Mouth and Throat
Contact St. Mungo’s emergency service. Report suspected burns to the airway. Take any steps to improve the casualty’s air supply, e.g., loosening clothing around the neck, bubblehead charms, etc. Give the casualty oxygen if you are trained to do so.

If the casualty becomes unconscious, place in the recovery position, and be prepared to resuscitate.

Minor Burns and Scalds
Minor burns and scalds are usually the result of accidental contact with dragons. Prompt first aid will generally enable them to heal naturally and well, but the advice of a medical practitioner should be sought if there is doubt as to the severity of the injury.

Treatment of Minor Burns and Scalds
DO NOT use adhesive dressings.
DO NOT break blisters, or interfere with the injured area.
DO NOT apply lotions, ointments, creams, or potions to the injured area.

Cool the injured part with cooling charms for about 10 minutes to stop the burning and relieve the pain. If charms are unavailable, any cold, harmless liquid such as water, milk or canned drinks will suffice.

Gently remove any jewelery or constricting clothing from the injured area before it starts to swell.

Cover the injury with a sterile dressing, or any clean, non-fluffy material to protect from infection.

An overdue letter home

Dear Mum,

I'm sure by now the school staff has let you know that I've lost a few points for Slytherin house. Please don't be overly concerned. I have gained more points than I've lost, and my grades are better this term than last, so far. I'm sure you can tell from the enclosed picture that I've grown quite a bit since I saw you last. That's to be expected, of course. I'm not as tall as Dad, but I think it won't be much longer.

Georgiana and I are as close as ever. We've been making plans for the future along with our mutual friend, Alfie Scrounge. I don't want to say too much about it in case this owl is intercepted, but I think you'd be impressed. I'd like to tell you all about it in person this summer.

Both the Daltons and professor Carrigan have extended an open invitation for you to visit, or I could come home if you think that would be alright. I miss you terribly and we have so much to talk about. I know that you would love the Daltons. They are among the kindest people I have ever met and they've taken very good care of me other the past year or so. So well, in fact, that I can afford to send a bit of money home. I hope it will help.

I think about you everyday, and try to do my best to make you proud of me. As always, I love you dearly and hope to see you soon.

Romuald

If your kiss was a hot dog, it would be a vegetarian hot dog. Everyone you kiss loves your kisses, because they’re better than sweet iced tea on an August afternoon.

Take This Quiz!

Burned-alive hot. Kid, you got some fire power.

This is the absolute hottest you can be. In fact, some might even consider it too hot. Not us. We can’t get enough of you.

You might want to rein some of it in, though, in certain situations – like job interviews, court appearances, visits to Grandma, and, of course, the odd visit to industrial meat freezers. When you got that heat, flaunt it, but there’s no reason to spoil a bunch of perfectly good beef.

Take This Quiz!

OOC vs IC info

I'd like to gently remind my fellow players of news rules #7 "Do not use OOC information ICly." This point is further clarified in news ooc information as follows: "OOC conversations and IC Journals on Livejournal are considered strictly OOC information."

Practise makes... pain.

My quidditch skills continue to improve with each practise. This time last year I could barely catch a quaffle if it was thrown straight at me, and I was a bit scared of bludgers. This year the quaffle seems to just fall into my hands, and the bludger and I have become sanguine partners.

I knocked Rhian off her broom so hard I thought I'd killed her. Since I learned in my first aid class this summer that ice was good for blunt injuries, I dumped a bucket of ice on her, and it worked! She revived immediately. But ice has unexpected side effects as well. She was NOT at all happy.. hinted that she might toss me off the team. So.. from now on I'm leaving first aid to the upper year Healing Arts students, at least until I learn some anesthesia spells.

Georgie and I played a bit of a bludger duel just for fun. She's really a very talented beater if she only knew it. She nailed me hard a couple of times, and wanted to keep playing after she took a bludger to the face. I insisted that we stop of course. I didn't want to split her other lip as well.

After Georgie went in for some bruise balm, Scrounge and I started up a game of Monkey-in-the-Middle with Est Howell. I could tell Scrounge's heart wasn't in the game though. Distracted by his girl troubles I guess. Being stuck in the middle for the greater part of the game didn't improve his mood at all. I took the opportunity to observe Howell's strengths and weaknesses. I'm sure we'll be discussing those at our next practise.

I need to talk to Prof Carrigan about getting bloodstains out of linen hankies. I seem to be going through them rather quickly this week.

Catching Up

Well.. I've been so busy I haven't had time to sit down and collect my thoughts.

Astronomy class was interesting. It seems the new crop of firsties are of the same mind as me when it comes to constellations.. why limit ourselves to the ones the Greeks described. It was encouraging to hear them coming up with new names for the old patterns. Even Soong seemed to be getting into it. Maybe there's hope for this subject yet.

Slytherin House is coming together in a way we haven't really done before. We're determined not to place last in the House Cup this term. The real benefit for me though is in Scrounge's tutoring. I need to see if I can pin Arche down about the French lessons as well. I'd like to continue where we left off last term, if he isn't too busy with NEWTs of course.

The Harvest Fair was amusing. I feel like I should have spent the day working on my essays instead, but Georgie wanted to go, and I didn't want to disappoint her. We get so little time together as it is. She fell asleep during the hayride and missed the stories. She woke up in time for the spooks though, which gave me an excuse to hold her tight, even with the prefects watching.

Defence class was an interesting experience today. I could tell right away that the extra tutoring and practice are having results. I wish Scrounge could have been there to see me levitate that desk so I could disarm Fionnuala. I thought it was rather clever myself. Unfortunately Mme Cleaver decided it was against the rules, so I was disqualified for it. But I was still the last one standing, and in the real world, that's what counts.

It would have been nice if the third year team had been rooting for me, but at the end they were cheering on Fin against me, because she's in their same house. I guess I should get started on that essay about team-tactics in dueling. First tactic: remember which team you're on; no one likes a turncoat. No fault to the firsties, they put up a good fight, and in the end, their team was stronger than ours, because they acted as a team.

19 September 1979

I shouldn't have been surprised to find Georgie in the Greenhouse when I went to work on my Herbology studies. It's the first time we've had a chance to be alone since the new term started. We talked about the special plans we made last summer, where and how and when. And then she wanted to talk about costumes for the Halloween party. I don't know why my idea made her sad, but it did. I'm sure we'll come up with something clever. There's still loads of time.

When I got back to Slytherin Commons I realized I still had all the gillyweed grubs in my pocket, so I put them in a jar, which seemed to catch everyone's attention. I guess they thought the grubs were for a prank, and I let them go on thinking that. It doesn't hurt to keep the housemates on their toes now and then. I bet Rhian will be up all night worrying about what I'm up to.

Scrounge seems pleased with the results of my defence practise so far. I still need to work on the fancy stuff a bit more, but its the basics that really matter, and I'm doing well with those, I think. He and Taylor and I had a long chat about dating in and out of house. They gave me a bit of teasing about seeing a Hufflepuff girl, but they both seem genuinely happy for me. I don't think I could date another Slytherin like Scrounge and Ciarra are, and I got the hint that Taylor may have her eye on a Gryffindor. Eeew!

I settled the deal with Scrounge. He's going to tutor me in Defence Against the Dark Arts. So I have sent to Dervish and Banges for a practice-wand as similar to my own as possible, and I will spend some time every afternoon repeating basic drills over and over until he thinks I'm ready to move on to the next lesson. Quickness come from familiarity, and familiarity comes from practice, practice, practice.

So, first quid practice of the new term and Rhian invited Scrounge and me to take shots at her with the bludgers. He wanted to wager on it, so I put my new bat against a promise of "Nothing more than ten hours' labor ... whatever it is. And nothing life-threatening ... or embarrassing." Nor Astronomy essays either, because Rhian heard the whole deal. I won with a solid hit that sent her to a hot bath. Now how can I best <strike>torment</strike> make use of Scrounge within the bounds of his agreement? Must sleep on it. Maybe Taylor will have a suggestion.

Back to School

Well, that's the end of a busy summer. I thought I'd be bored until school started up again, but this has been the best summer of my life. I rode the train back with Georgiana, just enjoying the last few hours of freedom together. At the sorting ceremony we had to go to our own house tables of course. I could see Meslana and Mollie looking toward the Slytherin table and whispering, but I don't know if they were looking at me or Kamarov. The wave from Georgie was for me though. After the ceremony I walked her to the Hufflepuff commons and then went on down to the Slytherin dorms to get my things unpacked. Rhian was holding a meeting in the commons, trying to encourage everyone to work harder for the House Cup this year, and recruiting for the quidditch team. Saoirse was trying to catch my attention. I need to make it a point to talk with her soon.

Girlfriends and Girl Friends

Poor Mollie. When I saw that picture, and more to the point, the way she was trying to hide it, I realized she was still hoping we might get together someday. I hated to crush her hopes, but it would have been crueler to let her waste herself on a dream that won't come true. I told her I didn't think it would be a good idea for us to see each other alone anymore. It looks too much like a date, and people will talk, probably already are talking. She got pretty hot about it. She seemed to think that meant we couldn't be friends at all anymore. I hope once we're all back in school she'll see that isn't the case.

I'm having the time of my life with the Daltons. I always figured they were nice, but I couldn't have guessed how laid back they can be. Elisabeth surprised me with her new look. There will be no mistaking her for Emmaline now. At first I thought Georgie's older cousins, Baxter, Greyson and Maxwell, were being kind of mean to her, like my sisters are with me, but having spent some more time with them, I can see that their pranks are all in fun, and they'd never really hurt her. Her father keeps surprising me. When he walks into the room I freeze up like I'm going to be in serious trouble or something, but he just smiles or musses up my hair. (Why do adults like to do that?) I need to learn to relax. He seems to genuinely like me, so what's to be nervous about?

I'm seeing a whole new side of Georgiana. I always knew she was fun, but I never realized how much of herself she holds back at school. It's wonderful to see her let down all the barriers and just be herself. The more I know her, the more she fascinates me.

When I came out for breakfast this morning (Belgian waffles with cream and fruit, yum!) Professor Carrigan had the table all laid out with everything I need for school. Books, new uniform and shoes, a potions kit and lots more. Then she showed me some plans for expanding the room where I've been staying. She talked about character and virtue, and about how Mum didn't want me home this summer because she's protecting me from the life she's stuck in. I sort of figured that already. But then she said it was up to me to do what needed to be done. What am I supposed to do? I'm only thirteen! She said that Mum could stay in her cottage if she needs to get away sometime, and she said I can stay there anytime I want. I miss Mum. It's been nearly a year since I've seen her and so much has changed since then. I'll send an owl to ask if she can come visit me here this summer, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Seamus came by early this afternoon looking for the professor to ask about a dinner menu he's putting together. I think it may be Georgie's birthday dinner he's planning. He asked what I was getting her and I had to admit that I've run out of ideas. He had a few suggestions that could work, but they don't feel quite right. I'm looking for something really special for her.

While we were talking, a boy I don't know stopped by the porch to ask about flowers. I'm sure it was a a blue cornflower he was looking for, going from his description. I told him to look down at the camp behind the stadium. There were lots of them growing there only a few weeks ago. I wonder if he knows that they used to grow wild all over the UK. Now they're limited to just a few isolated areas, St. Mary Mead being one of them.

Seamus invited me to drop round for tea with his aunt one day soon. He didn't make it sound as if she'd give me a warm welcome though. She sounds like one of those fussy old spinsters with white carpet and plastic covers over all the furniture. I have to keep reminding myself that Seamus is a year older than me, because I'm so much taller than he is. He isn't much bigger than Mollie. I bet they'd look cute together, and for some reason that thought disturbs me.
